Aptia, the UK’s largest third-party pensions administrator, welcomes the publication of The Pensions Regulator’s (TPR) Market Oversight Report, having worked closely with TPR on this important initiative aimed at strengthening pension administration across the UK.

The report is available on the TPR website here.

Malcolm Reynolds, Aptia’s UK President, said: ‘We support TPR’s call for stronger collaboration between trustees and administrators, recognising the critical role of administration and the need for continued investment in technology, data quality, and cyber resilience.

‘The member experience is high on the agenda of regulators and trustees, and pensions administrators play a crucial role as the contact point between members and their scheme. Administrators are also at the centre of pension schemes’ strategic plans – from derisking to pensions dashboards and Guaranteed Minimum Pension equalisation.

‘For too long, administration has been seen as a low-margin, back-office function, resulting in chronic underinvestment. We are pleased to see this perception shifting at last. Pension scheme members who view their bank balances on their phones should be able to check on their pensions just as easily. Pension schemes also now have a clear path to getting their data ready to meet the demands of pensions dashboards and other regulatory requirements.

‘The report underscores the data challenges faced by pension schemes, which affect everything from automation to member communications. Acknowledging this is an issue for trustees, we have already developed tools to help them enhance data quality resulting in more engaging member experiences. We also support greater standardisation and transparency, including alignment with PASA’s Code of Conduct on Administration Provider Transfers.

‘The report highlights industry challenges, including staffing pressures and inconsistent cyber security standards. We continue to tackle these issues through improved platforms and governance frameworks, and a commitment to best practice standards – including our partnership with the Pensions Management Institute which is helping us provide our teams with the skills and knowledge to meet evolving industry standards and deliver a consistently high-quality service.

‘As the industry prepares for pensions dashboards and wider reforms, Aptia encourages trustees to view administrators as strategic partners - engaging them in decision-making, embedding quality-focused Service Level Agreements, and prioritising data integrity.

‘We welcome TPR’s commitment to a new administration strategy and look forward to contributing to future working groups and sharing innovation through its Innovation Support Service to help raise standards and improve outcomes.’
